Tomball's Perfect Season Ends in State Semifinal Thriller vs. Flower Mound Marcus

June 3, 2026
Tomball's perfect 40-0 season took a hit in the state baseball semifinals when Flower Mound Marcus won Game 1, 2-1, before Tomball took the series.

Forty wins, zero losses — and then Flower Mound Marcus.

Tomball arrived at the UIL baseball state semifinals as one of the most compelling stories in Texas high school baseball, carrying a perfect 40-0 record into a matchup with Flower Mound Marcus. The Cougars wouldn't leave with that record intact.

Marcus struck first when Braden Gulick fought off a pitch and dropped it into left field, scoring Cole Schott from second to make it 1-0. The lead grew to 2-0 on a controversial play — Easton Mitchell lifted a fly ball to right, Austin Allen tagged from third, and the throw appeared to beat him to the plate, but the umpire ruled interference on the catcher for blocking the basepath.

Tomball answered in the fourth. Bryce Hillegeist ripped a ball into the left-center gap that rolled to the wall, and Brady Burrow — running on the pitch — scored to cut the deficit to 2-1. Texas A&M commit C.J. Sampson kept the Cougars in it from the mound, recording a strikeout in the seventh, but Tomball hit into a fielder's choice with the tying run at second to end the game.

Marcus won Game 1, 2-1, snapping Tomball's unbeaten run. The Cougars, however, responded with back-to-back wins to take the series and advance.
