Sharyland Rallies Past Kingwood Park 5-3 in 5A-DII State Semifinals
Kingwood Park came out swinging in the 5A-Division 2 state baseball semifinals, but it was Sharyland that made the decisive statement — and it came on one swing.
The Panthers grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nathan Eveler drove in the opening run with a shot over the right fielder's head, scoring Dylahn Bodkin all the way from first base. Sharyland's pitcher then compounded the deficit with an errant pickoff throw to third, allowing Kingwood Park to push across two runs in the frame.
Sharyland answered in the bottom of the second with the at-bat that changed the game. Omar Cantu stepped up with the bases loaded and drove one over the center fielder's head, clearing the bases and giving Sharyland a 4-2 lead. Later in the same inning, a pop-up in the infield caused confusion in the Kingwood Park defense, and Cantu alertly raced home, beating the tag to extend the lead to 5-2.
Kingwood Park managed to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Sharyland's pitching held firm the rest of the way. The final score: Sharyland 5, Kingwood Park 3, sending Sharyland to the next round of the 5A-Division 2 state tournament.
