Lutheran South Wins TAPPS D2 State Championship 4-3 Over Fort Worth Christian

May 28, 2026
Lutheran South rallied past Fort Worth Christian 4-3 in the TAPPS D2 state baseball championship, with Richard Jones delivering the go-ahead RBI single.

Five hours of rain and a 1-0 deficit couldn't stop Lutheran South Academy from claiming the TAPPS Division II state baseball championship. The Pioneers rallied for four runs over the final two innings to defeat Fort Worth Christian 4-3, capping a dramatic finish that tested both teams' patience and resolve.

Fort Worth Christian drew first blood in the top of the first inning when Jake Parkerson's hot shot down the third-base line proved too difficult to handle, allowing Griffin Carney to score and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Lutheran South starter David Corona settled in after the early trouble, striking out a batter to escape the jam and keep the deficit manageable.

The Cardinals featured a marquee name in Grady Emerson, a pitcher touted as a top-three overall pick in this year's draft. Emerson appeared to have a clean single in the second inning, but center fielder Theron Ayala had other ideas, climbing the ladder to haul in the would-be hit and preserve the Pioneers' momentum.

After the lengthy rain delay, Lutheran South came alive at the plate. The Pioneers scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, then pushed across the decisive run on a Richard Jones RBI single to take a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. For University of Houston commit Jaylen Walker, it was a fitting final chapter to his high school career — a state championship in his last game as a Pioneer.
