Tomball Sweeps Rowlett 10-1 to Advance to State Semifinals
A perfect season remained intact as the nation's top-ranked team continued its historic run through the postseason. Tomball entered its Class 6A Division Two Region Two third round matchup in Georgetown with a 37-0-1 record, facing Rowlett (20-7) in game two with a chance to sweep the series.
The Cougars wasted no time establishing control. In the bottom of the first inning, Keagan Fosdick launched a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Tomball an early 2-0 lead. Nolan Rush followed with a drive over the left fielder's head that scored Fosdick from second, extending the advantage to 3-0 and chasing Rowlett starter Tripp Thompson from the game.
Relief pitcher Tucker Opie fared no better in his first inning of work. Caleb Gafford ripped a ball toward the right field line that plated two more runs, and by the end of the first frame, Tomball had built a commanding 6-0 lead. The Cougars added another run when Rush drove a ball into left field, with Hopkins advancing home on an error to make it 7-0. CJ Samspon later laced a liner past short that rolled to the wall, scoring Corbin Cook for an 8-0 cushion.
Tomball's defense matched its offensive output. Rush made a strong play at third base, fielding a slow roller and throwing out the runner. Second baseman Hunter Myers dove to stop a ground ball and delivered a one-hop throw to first baseman Fosdick, who picked it cleanly. Shortstop Catcher Hopkins also flashed leather with a diving stop in the six hole, tossing out the runner at second.
The Cougars tacked on two late runs to complete the 10-1 victory, sweeping the Eagles out of the playoffs. Tomball advances to the state semifinals next week.
