Klein Stays Perfect at 7-0, Tops Klein Cain 37-14 Behind Bryne Johnson's 3 TDs
Seven-and-0 is not where most people expected Klein to be at this point in the season, but the Bearkats are making a strong case that they belong among the Houston area's elite. Friday night's district matchup against Klein Cain — a program still licking its wounds from a loss the week before — turned into a statement game.
Klein struck first when running back Bryne Johnson fought through a wall of defenders and muscled his way into the end zone for a 6-0 lead. Cain answered quickly, with quarterback Jace Hanks pulling the ball down and taking off on a 41-yard touchdown run to give the Bobcats a 7-6 edge. But that lead didn't last long.
The second quarter belonged to Klein's passing game. Quarterback Carter Latelle found Mike Brown in stride down the sideline, and Brown did the rest — 86 yards, untouched, to put the Bearkats up 15-7 at the half. From there, Klein's ground game took over. Johnson added his second score in the third quarter, then capped the night with a 32-yard counter run in the fourth — his third touchdown of the game — as Klein pulled away for a 37-14 final.
The win keeps Klein perfect heading into the back half of district play, a remarkable run for a program that has quietly built one of the more compelling stories in the Houston area this fall.
