Houston Memorial Baseball Shuts Out Alvin 6-0 Behind Jake Earnest's Big Night
A winning streak of 18 games carried Houston Memorial into Sugarland for a matchup with Alvin, and the Mustangs kept their momentum rolling with a dominant 6-0 shutout.
Memorial struck first in the opening inning when Isaac Richardson ripped a single up the middle, plating Even Mauritzen from third base. Tanner Drda followed with a base hit to center field, scoring Jake Earnest to push the lead to 2-0.
Earnest then took over at the plate, launching a shot to right field that one-hopped the fence. Mauritzen raced home all the way from first base as Earnest cruised into third with an RBI triple, extending the Mustangs' advantage to 3-0.
Memorial's pitching staff kept Alvin off the scoreboard, with Grant Sperandio delivering a crucial strikeout on a high fastball in the top of the third inning with a runner in scoring position.
The Mustangs added insurance runs in the sixth inning. Dillon Norris drove a ball past the drawn-in infield, allowing Boone McLaughlin to trot home for a 4-0 lead. Earnest struck again with another deep shot over the center fielder's head, scoring both McLaughlin and Jackson Carillo.
Memorial secured the 6-0 shutout victory in the series opener, though Alvin would rally to take the overall series.
