Pearland Softball Wins 4th State Title, Defeats Waco Midway 6-3
Four state championships. That is now the mark for Pearland softball after the Oilers knocked off defending champion Waco Midway 6-3 on Championship Saturday.
Madelyn Guzman set the tone early in the circle, recording a strikeout to close out the second inning and keeping the game scoreless into the third. Pearland broke through when Peyton Powell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating the first run. The next batter, Elaina Njus, ripped one off the glove of the second baseman to score Anison Lopez, and just like that the Oilers had a 4-0 cushion.
Pearland added to the lead in the fifth when Mya Meza lined one to center to score Abigail Brooks, pushing the advantage to five runs. Midway mounted a rally in the seventh, but Guzman closed the door with a strikeout to preserve the win.
The 6-3 final gives Pearland its fourth state title and ends Waco Midway's reign as defending champion.
