Columbus Softball Wins Region, Advances to State Semifinals with 9-6 Victory over Goliad
A regional title was on the line, and Columbus softball delivered when it mattered most, defeating Goliad 9-6 in the 3A-Division 1 regional final to advance to the state semifinals.
The Cardinals found themselves trailing 2-1 in the third inning before Emma Beauchamp ripped a ball down the left-field line, allowing Kaylea Foster to score the tying run. Later in the same inning, Allie Cranek drove one off the wall in left-center, plating Beauchamp and giving Columbus the lead. Aggie Rodriguez added to the advantage with a perfectly executed safety squeeze, pushing the score to 4-2.
Goliad refused to fold. In the fourth inning, Shiyla Schmidt lined a single past short that brought in two runs, giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead and shifting the momentum.
Columbus answered in the bottom of the fifth. Presley Drozd hammered a high fastball that nearly cleared the fence, settling for a wall-ball hit that scored Rodriguez and put the Cardinals back in front 7-5. Beauchamp then added another run-scoring hit up the middle to extend the lead further.
Columbus closed it out 9-6, winning the region and earning a spot in next week's state semifinals.
