Barbers Hill Slugs 7 Home Runs, Advances to State Softball Finals
Seven home runs. One game. One trip to the state finals.
Barbers Hill entered its playoff matchup against Leander two wins away from a state title berth, and the Eagles made a statement in emphatic fashion, slugging their way to an 8-1 victory behind one of the most prolific power-hitting performances in recent Houston-area high school softball memory.
Leander drew first blood when Kylee Arnold set up a Rachel Grundei RBI to put the Eagles in an early 1-0 hole. Barbers Hill answered quickly. Zoey Hood launched one over the left-field wall to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead, and the offense never looked back.
The sixth inning turned into a home run derby. Taylor Lozano went deep to center — a ball that traveled well beyond the warning track — and two batters later Hood connected again, this time down the line and off the foul pole for her second home run of the night. Helena Lawrence followed two batters after that, driving a high fastball to the deepest part of the park for another solo shot, pushing the lead to 6-1.
Lozano capped the night with her second home run in the seventh inning. The final tally: seven home runs, an 8-1 final, and a berth in the state finals.
Hood and Lozano each went deep twice, with Lawrence adding another. The performance underscores why Barbers Hill has been one of the most dangerous offensive programs in its classification this postseason.
