Pearland Oilers Softball: Maddy Guzman Throws Complete Game No-Hitter vs. Fort Bend Travis
Fourteen strikeouts. Zero hits allowed. Maddy Guzman delivered one of the more dominant pitching performances of the Houston-area softball season, throwing a complete game no-hitter to lead the Pearland Oilers past Fort Bend Travis 6-0 in game one at Crawford High School.
Guzman had help early. With the Oilers already protecting a lead, left fielder Dre Smith made a diving catch in the outfield to bail out her pitcher and keep the no-hit bid intact. Anison Lopez added to the cushion with an RBI single that scored Mya Meza, pushing Pearland's advantage to 2-0.
The Oilers didn't need to rely solely on pitching. Layla Bennett went deep off Fort Bend Travis pitcher Shelby Byrd, a home run that extended the lead to 4-0. The very next batter, Payton Shugart — Pearland's team leader in hitting — followed with a solo blast over the left-center field wall to make it a five-run game.
Guzman closed it out from there, finishing with 14 strikeouts and a clean sheet through the lineup. Pearland took game one 6-0.
