Oak Ridge Edges Magnolia 2-1 in Area Finals Softball Thriller

May 7, 2026
Oak Ridge softball defeats Magnolia 2-1 in area finals behind strong defense from Ava Bennett, advancing to regional semifinals.

A one-run game decided in the early innings sent Oak Ridge to the regional semifinals Wednesday night. The War Eagles built a 2-0 lead through three innings and held off Magnolia 2-1 in their area finals clash.

Oak Ridge struck first when Macy Browning drove in Ava Bennett with an RBI groundout to second in the opening frame. The War Eagles added insurance in the third with textbook small ball—Bailey Sligar executed a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Geo Ramirez and push the lead to 2-0.

Magnolia answered in the bottom of the third when Stevie South laced a gap shot to left-center. Kyley Shaver, who got an excellent jump off first base, used her speed to race all the way home and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The difference came down to defense. Bennett made a diving stop on a line drive off the bat of Reagan Christopherson, then turned a critical double play the following inning, tagging a runner at shortstop before firing to second to complete the twin killing. Oak Ridge's defense preserved the one-run margin and secured the regional semifinal berth.
