Houston Memorial Blanks Katy Tompkins 4-0, Wins Series Behind Sperandio's Complete-Game Gem
Twenty straight wins is a statement. Houston Memorial kept that streak alive with a 4-0 shutout of Katy Tompkins, closing out the playoff series against a Tompkins squad that entered with little pressure and plenty of momentum of its own.
The Mustangs struck first in the opening inning when Ethan Baylis singled over the second baseman's head, scoring Jake Earnest to make it 1-0. Memorial added to the lead in the second on a Boone McLaughlin single back up the box that brought home Halen Heinz, and Heinz contributed at the plate again in the third, dumping a breaking ball into right field to score Tanner Drda and push the lead to 3-0.
Grant Sperandio was the story on the mound. The Memorial starter worked a complete-game four-hitter, finishing the sixth inning with a strikeout and keeping Tompkins off the board throughout. He got plenty of help behind him — McLaughlin turned a smooth one-handed flip to Evan Mauritzen for an inning-ending double play in the fourth, and Mauritzen came up with another key scoop in the fifth to record an out on a tough bouncer off Sperandio's glove.
Memorial wins 4-0 and takes the series, advancing with its 20-game winning streak still intact.
