Cy Ranch QB Braden Baker on 32 TDs, State Goals & Committing to Houston

Entering his senior season, Braden Baker already has the kind of stat line that turns heads across District 23-6A. The Cy Ranch quarterback threw for 2,800 yards and 32 touchdowns against just one interception last year, guiding the Mustangs to a 10-3 record and a regional semifinal appearance — the program's deepest playoff run since 2014.

Head coach Wil Blaylock has called Baker the best pure passer he has ever coached, and the numbers back that up. Baker's ability to protect the football has been a defining trait, and he says staying composed and studying film are the keys to keeping turnovers at a minimum. "I just got to stay composed in games and be smart," Baker said. "Watch film, watch what the other teams are doing."

With that success comes a target on Cy Ranch's back, and Baker isn't shying away from the weight of expectation. The Mustangs have their sights set on a state title, and Baker believes the pieces are in place. "We know our goal is to win state this year, and I know we can do it," he said.

Off the field, Baker has committed to the University of Houston, citing his relationship with quarterbacks coach Sean Bell as the driving factor behind his decision to stay home. Baker was also presented with a Parker University MVP bobblehead in recognition of his standout junior campaign.
