Atascocita Sweeps Deer Park Behind Clutch Defense to Reach Area Finals
A sweep was the only path forward, and Atascocita delivered. The Eagles knocked off Deer Park in both games Friday night to advance to the area finals, with Game 1 setting the tone in a tightly contested 2-1 victory.
Atascocita scratched out two runs in the first inning, with Ava Pittman providing the key blow on an RBI knock to give the Eagles an early cushion. From there, the defense took over.
Shortstop Cailynn Ruzick made a diving stop up the middle, got to her knees, and still had enough arm to retire the runner at first. In the fourth, center fielder Marigny Thomas tracked down a ball in the gap and made a diving catch to keep Deer Park off the board.
Deer Park trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth when Gabby Sanchez grounded out to third to plate a run, setting up a tense final frame. With the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, pitcher Maya Hernandez snagged a comebacker to end the threat and seal the win.
Atascocita took Game 2 as well to clinch the series and punch their ticket to the area finals.
