Averaging around six digs per set, Tomball senior libero Gemma Hopkins has built a reputation as one of the most reliable defensive specialists in Texas high school volleyball. The Cougars leaned on her floor presence to reach the state semifinals a season ago, and Hopkins has her sights set on going further in what will be her final run in a Tomball uniform.
Hopkins was named the Parker University MVP and became the show's first-ever volleyball bobblehead recipient — an honor she called a blessing. "I think it's like a little mini me," she said. "It's so cute and I'm so, so honored."
The mindset that drives her relentless defensive game is straightforward. "My mentality when I'm on the court is just go, go, go, go," Hopkins said. "It doesn't matter how it feels. It's literally just get them all up. That's your job." She described the libero role as one built on sacrifice — covering ground for teammates and picking up mistakes so the offense can function.
Hopkins comes from a family where competition is woven into everyday life. Her sister Lilly plays college volleyball, and her brother Catcher recently won his second state title in baseball before heading off to college himself. Rather than feeling pressure to match those achievements, Hopkins said the environment simply made her and her siblings closer and pushed all of them to be better.
After her senior season wraps up, Hopkins will take her game to Fayetteville, where she'll play for Arkansas. She cited her connection with the coaching staff, the relationships she built with her future teammates, and the campus itself as the factors that made the decision clear. "It just kind of felt like that was just my place," she said.
