Vince Young on Madison High School, the 2005 Championship & Brothers in Arms

Few quarterbacks in Texas high school football history generated the kind of anticipation that followed Vince Young out of Houston Madison. Accounting for nearly 13,000 yards of total offense during his prep career, Young earned Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year honors before heading to the University of Texas, where he led the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship with a performance in the Rose Bowl that remains one of college football's most celebrated moments.

Earlier this spring, Jeff Powers caught up with Young at the Brothers in Arms celebrity golf tournament, a Houston-rooted charitable event built around the shared bond between Young, Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon — three Houston quarterbacks who each rose from single-parent households to reshape the game at its highest levels.

Young spoke warmly about his time at Madison under Coach Seals, describing him as a father figure whose lessons about hard work and staying out of trouble still shape the message Young carries to the next generation. He recalled playing at the Astrodome — including a memorable matchup against Westlake — as a formative chapter that helped put Madison on the map and opened the door for Mack Brown to come recruiting.

On the 2005 season, Young said he hears about it every day, and considers it a blessing rather than a burden. He credited Coach Brown with reminding him not to let the championship be the only defining moment of his life — a philosophy that now drives his community work.

The Brothers in Arms foundation has grown to attract a roster of Hall of Fame athletes across sports, including Eric Dickerson, all united around a single message: giving back. Young emphasized that the foundation's goal is not just to award scholarships, but to make sure young people in Houston know they are seen, valued, and supported regardless of where their path leads.
