Westfield Mustangs Defense Allows Just One TD in Four Games | Chevy Spotlight

October 7, 2026
Westfield's defense has allowed just one TD in four games, making the Mustangs heavy favorites in District 14-6A and serious playoff contenders.

One touchdown allowed in four games. That's the number defining the Westfield Mustangs through the first month of the 2026 season, and it's a figure that has the Greater Houston area paying close attention.

The Mustangs — known as the Jack Boys — have built a defensive identity that stretches back well before this roster arrived. The program's NFL wall is a reminder of that legacy, featuring names like Ed Oliver, the defensive tackle who went on to star for the Buffalo Bills after suiting up for Westfield. Current players say they feel the weight of that standard every time they take the field.

Head coach Desmar Black has been part of the Westfield staff for nearly two decades, calling defensive plays since 2012 and taking over as head coach two seasons ago. His scheme has the Mustangs swarming to the ball, creating disruption in the backfield, and generating turnovers on demand. Against Eisenhower, Westfield pitched a shutout and recorded two pick-sixes. Limiting Randle to three points in week two was another statement performance. The only two teams to find the end zone against Westfield this season did so in the fourth quarter — and both scores came against a defense that had already decided the outcome.

Despite enrollment numbers that could place them lower, Westfield has opted up and is considered a heavy favorite to win District 14-6A. With the defense playing at this level, the Mustangs believe a long playoff run — and potentially a state title — is within reach.
