Michael Brockers on His Chavez High School Roots and Path to the NFL

Ten sacks as a junior. A playoff run as a senior. And a freshman year spent playing varsity football before he even fully understood the game. Michael Brockers' path from Chavez High School to a long NFL career is the kind of story Houston prep football produces and rarely forgets.

Brockers, who graduated from Chavez in 2009 after helping the Loboes reach the postseason in 2008, returned to the Houston area to host his annual youth football and cheer camp—an event that drew enough participants to run the staff out of shirts, something Brockers noted with genuine pride. Former high school and college teammates joined him on the field, turning the camp into a reunion as much as a community event.

In a Chevy Spotlight interview at the camp, Brockers was candid about how unpolished he was early on. He recalled standing in the weight room unable to lift 135 pounds while teammates looked on, and described his freshman varsity experience as humbling—wide-eyed under the lights, learning the sport in real time. The confidence came later, built through repetition and a work ethic that eventually made him the leader of the team.

His most vivid high school memory isn't a win. It's a 21-14 loss to Madison—a game where he was so locked in that a photo of him hitting the quarterback ended up on the front page. As a four-star recruit, Brockers said the rankings didn't weigh on him. He knew he wanted LSU, took the offer when it came, and never looked back.

Now he's looking for the next version of himself in the kids at his camp—the big ones who don't yet know what they have.
