Kiara Marshall: Back-to-Back 6A State Champion & Girls Basketball Coach of the Year
Only 10 UIL programs in history have repeated as girls basketball state champions. Kiara Marshall's Summer Creek Lady Bulldogs are now one of them.
Marshall, named the HOU Inside High School Sports Girls Basketball Coach of the Year presented by Parker University, took over the Summer Creek program in 2024 and has not lost a season since. In her first year, she delivered the school's first-ever state championship. In her second, she brought home another — defeating Flower Mound 55-45 in the 6A Division I title game to cement the Lady Bulldogs' place in UIL history.
The back-to-back run didn't come without pressure. Entering the 2025-26 season as defending champions, Summer Creek carried a target, and Marshall leaned on preparation and resilience as the program's guiding principles. "Watching them persevere through having a target on their back, coming through and still being able to be successful was amazing to watch," she said.
Marshall was quick to credit her predecessor, Karlous Dixon, for laying the foundation that made the program a consistent contender. The two collaborated during the transition, and Marshall built on what Dixon had established — adding her own approach to an already winning culture. "Coach Dixon did a phenomenal job building the program," Marshall said. "I was able to come in and add my own flair to what has already been such a successful program."
With two banners now hanging in the gym, Marshall says the expectation at Summer Creek has shifted permanently. Before her arrival, a state title was the one thing missing. Now, it's the standard.
