District 17-6A Preview: The Toughest Football District in Texas

Six state championship game appearances in five years. That's the standard District 17-6A has set, and by most accounts inside the Houston area, no other district in Texas comes close to matching it.

Defending UIL Class 6A Division I state champion North Shore enters 2026 with a quarterback competition still unsettled, but head coach Willie Gaston isn't losing sleep over it. The Mustangs have won five state titles since 2015 and have the skill-position talent to carry whoever wins the starting job. Gaston's message to his quarterbacks has been simple: let the playmakers make plays and don't force anything.

The team that handed North Shore a 27-0 shutout in district play last season, Summer Creek, returns as one of the most complete rosters in the state. Since 2021, the Bulldogs are 56-16 under head coach Kenny Harrison, including a state championship appearance in 2023. Senior quarterback Noah Spinks threw for nearly 3,700 yards and 43 touchdowns last year, with a significant share of those going to receiver Benny Easter, who is committed to Texas Tech.

Cy-Fair ISD's Atascocita has reached the postseason 13 consecutive years and brings back receiver Brian Manuel Jr., who goes up against three Division I defensive backs in practice every day. The Eagles also have a new head coach in Kyle Coats, who arrives from College Park and inherits a program with deep playoff roots built by 14-year coach Craig Stump.

Humble ISD's Summer Creek isn't the only program with momentum. Katy ISD transfer Tristan Willis joins sprinter Dylan Mitchell and Antoine Sanders to give Humble's Atascocita-area rival Atascocita — and district newcomer Crosby, moving up from Class 5A — plenty of competition to navigate before October even arrives.

Kingwood, Channelview, Cedar, and Crosby all enter 2026 with new head coaches, adding another layer of unpredictability to an already volatile district. Kingwood's new staff inherits five-star offensive lineman Kennedy Brown, a prospect who alone changes the calculus for any opponent's defensive game plan.

For the teams inside District 17-6A, the regular season isn't just preparation for the playoffs — it essentially is the playoffs.
