Dayton Track Building Something Special Behind State Contender Jaxon Asbill
Forty miles northeast of Houston, Dayton High School's track program is still in its early stages — but the growth is hard to ignore. Under 23-year coaching veteran Ron Frick, the Broncos have spent the last year and a half focused on numbers and building a foundation, and the results are starting to show.
Leading that charge is senior distance runner Jaxon Asbill, who finished second at the UIL state cross country championships last fall. Now, with the track season moving toward the postseason, Asbill has set a clear and ambitious target. "My only goal is to win a state title in the 1600 and the 3200," he said. "That's the only goal." Frick describes Asbill as a complete athlete — one who prioritizes sleep, diet, and every detail of sport performance — and notes that running is in his blood, with both of his parents among the best cross country runners to come out of Dayton.
Beyond Asbill, a young relay group has quietly become one of the more intriguing storylines of the spring. The group is made up largely of multi-sport athletes who are only a handful of meets into their track careers, yet they've already been finishing first and second across the board. "We've been getting first and second all across the board so far," one relay member said, pointing to team chemistry and daily communication as key factors in their early success.
Frick acknowledges the program is still in its infancy, but the trajectory is pointing upward. With district competition approaching, he says his athletes have done everything he's asked — and for a coach, that's the foundation everything else is built on.
