Dayton High School Track Team Building Toward State With Distance Star Jaxon Asbill
A track program 40 miles northeast of Houston is laying the foundation for something bigger. Dayton High School has seen a surge in participation over the past year and a half, and coach Ron Frick—in his 23rd year coaching track—believes this year's group has special potential.
Senior distance runner Jaxon Asbill leads the charge. After finishing second at the state cross country championships last fall, Asbill has set his sights on a rare double: winning state titles in both the 1600 and 3200 meters. His pedigree runs deep—both parents were standout distance runners at Dayton—and Frick praises his commitment to every detail, from sleep to diet to training.
Beyond Asbill, Dayton has assembled a young relay group that's already turning heads despite being just three or four meets into their track careers. The unit includes two sophomores and is composed entirely of multi-sport athletes who are still learning the nuances of the sport. Despite their inexperience, they've been claiming first and second place finishes across the board, with strong team chemistry developing through daily communication and competition in practice.
Frick emphasizes that the program is still in its infancy, focused on building numbers and establishing a foundation. As district competition approaches, he's encouraged by his athletes' effort and willingness to execute. For a program on the rise, the postseason could reveal just how far this young Dayton team has come.
