Andrew Jones Sets National Records & Signs with Texas A&M | Next Level
A national record, two UIL Class 6A state titles, and an undefeated season—Andrew Jones wrapped up his senior year at Klein Collins about as completely as a high school track athlete can.
At the Texas Relays earlier this spring, Jones ran a 12.97 in the 110 meter hurdles, setting a national record for all weather conditions. He then returned to Mike Myers Stadium in Austin for the UIL State Track and Field Championships and won gold in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, completing a dominant senior campaign without a single loss.
The 110 meter final was the closest race Jones faced all season. Tyler Key of Richardson Berkner pushed him to the wire, finishing in 13.05, but Jones held on for the win. The 300 meter hurdles told a different story—Jones crossed in 36 seconds flat, a strong performance, though slightly off his own national record of 34.72, a time that had already erased a mark set by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III during his days at Copperas Cove High School.
Jones described running hurdles as a sixth sense—something that comes naturally. That instinct, combined with his finish in the top 4% of his senior class, made him one of the more complete student-athletes to come out of the Klein ISD program in recent memory.
He will continue his career at Texas A&M University, and given his trajectory, the conversation around Jones may shift from collegiate competition to the Olympic stage before long.
