Willis Holds Off Spring Westfield 12-7 in 6A Unbeaten Showdown

Two undefeated 6A programs. One goal-line stand. Willis came away with the harder-earned of the two results, holding off Spring Westfield 12-7 in a low-scoring battle that came down to the final seconds.

The Wildkats drew first blood in the third quarter when defensive end AJ Edwards chased down Jadarious Amos in the endzone for a safety, giving Willis a 5-0 lead. That margin held until the fourth quarter, when Westfield answered with a DeMonte Ford counter run — Ford kept his balance through traffic and reached the pylon to put the Mustangs ahead 7-5.

Willis responded with some deception. Trey Finney took a handoff, sold the run convincingly, then pulled up and found Preston Stephenson wide open in the endzone. The trick play gave the Wildkats a 12-7 lead they would not relinquish.

Westfield had one final chance, driving inside the Willis 5-yard line with under a minute to play. The Wildkats defense held on three straight plays, with J'Lynnd Kellow delivering the key hit on fourth down to stop the Mustangs inches short of the endzone. Willis ran out the clock and preserved the victory, keeping its unbeaten record intact.
