2019 Countdown to Kickoff - Spring Westfield Mustangs
Spring - Spring Westfield is one of just a handful of teams at the 6A level that seems to be able to reload year after year. This fall should be no different as Westfield will return five players from one of the better defensive units in the Houston area last season. However, the offense returns just three players which leaves some question marks on that side of the ball. Westfield went 12-2 last year with both losses being to teams that won state championships. Westfield lost to 6A DI champion North Shore 35-3 early in the year. Then, after winning three playoff games, all by a slim margin, Westfield bowed out in the fourth round when they were shut out by 6A DII champion Longview 14-0.
Among the three players returning on offense for Westfield is wide receiver Malachai Jones, who had 786 yards and caught seven touchdowns a year ago. JV players and varsity backups will move into starting roles to fill out the other skill positions on offense this season.
The defense is quite a different story as Linebacker Dyllon Peavy returns as one of the best in the Houston area after recording 109 tackles to go with three interceptions last season. Tim Hardiman and Nicholas Brown will team to form a formidable duo in the secondary and will be counted on to wreak havoc once again this season.
The district schedule looks very manageable but the Mustangs do have to play at North Shore, so an undefeated season may not be in the cards. If they can give North Shore a game and make it out in good health, Westfield will be set up for a successful regular season and another deep playoff run.
