Westfield High School Football - Chevy Spotlight
It’s been a decade since Corby Meekins led Westfield to the state finals in his first season on the job. An abundance of playoff success has followed, 132 of his players have received football scholarships the most of any school in Houston during that span, 3 of his players have made it to the NFL, but there is one glaring omission. A State Championship. That’s our goal every year that is our goal this year. It’s going to take a lot hard work and sacrifice and all the little things for us to get there, but this team if we keep improving week by week it has the opportunity to do that. I can see we have come up short a couple of times we just got to finish. Coach Meekins told us about the 2004 season where they came up seven points short and all they had to do was finish and it seems like the following years they were short again. Every year it seems like we can get closer, but this year I think we can do it this year. One of the Hallmarks of Westfield’s top teams has been strength up front, and this year should be a perfect example as the Mustangs offensive line features two players who have received scholarship offers to Big 12 schools. Toby Weathersby who has committed to Texas, and Cordelle Iwaugwu who has verballed to TCU. They both have a drive for excellence and it doesn’t just show up on the football field. hey are great kids off the field and they are both straight A students, and they are both want to be the best, they have that drive which is innate. It all comes down to leadership, the big boys carry the team and put the team on our back and they know we are going to lead the team to victory and they believe in us and we believe in them to make plays. Westfield lost in the 5A division 1 regional final last year to eventual state champion Allen. The two time defending champs have moved into region 1 this season, and while the Mustangs would love the potential rematch that would take place in the state semifinals they are much more focused on the current business at hand. Our job is to get ready all we have to do is prepare. There is a gap missing on the Westfield resume, but a state title isn’t the gauge that this powerhouse measures itself by. I don’t feel like that what our kids accomplish over the course of the season or the time that they are in our program for those four years. If we are measuring that just on championships then we are missing the boat, I like seeing where they come in as people as students and then I like to see where they are when they cross that stage because winners win and we’re trying to build winners in life and in the classroom and football and trying to do things that are going to last way longer than championships. The Westfield Mustangs Football Team, this week’s Chevy Spotlight.
