This Week We Go Around the Area To Preview The High School Football Season
The first team out of anyone’s mouth when talking 6-A Division 1 is the North Shore Mustangs. Jon Kay’s bunch has won 3 of the last 4 state titles and have solidified themselves as a dynasty. The 2021 state champions won 15 games with a freshman quarterback, so they will have experience behind center. Another advantage for the Mustangs is that they are playing in a district where the 4 playoff teams went at least 3 rounds deep Atascocita, Summer Creek and CE King will be expected to make yet another long post season run. If 21-6A is the toughest district in the area then 19-6A is a close second. The Katy ISD district already had powerhouses like Katy, Tompkins and Cinco Ranch in it, but Paetow moves up from 5-A after winning a state title there. The Tigers will be tough to beat with their formidable running game led by Seth Davis and Dallas Glass. However, the Paetow Panthers have one of the best defenses in the state led by defensive end, DJ Hicks. The quarterback position will be key in 6-A. Spring Westfield brings in PJ hatter from Klein Oak to lead their offense while the Woodlands has junior Mabry Mettaur back after a stellar sophomore campaign. Some of last year’s district champs are favored to repeat. Dickinson, Ridge Point and Klein Collins all have what takes to hang up another district banner. The biggest moves in this past realignment were some of the teams that moved up from 5-A to 6-A. Paetow knew this move was coming over the past couple years and have prepared to battle larger schools. However, Fort Bend Hightower, always a favorite in 5-A, got pushed up unexpectedly to 6-A, but feel if their athletes perform well, they can overcome the numbers game. Look for Crosby and Manvel to have Houston’s best chance to advance in 5-A Division 1. While Fort Bend Marshall will be trying to shake off a disappointing first round exit last year to make a deep run in division 2. As for the lower classifications, El Campo and all everything running back Rueben Owens has the best chance to win a title in 4-A
