Terry Rangers vs. Kimball Knights - Chevy Team of the Week - 2013
It was on to the 4A final for Terry and they'd need a big night from Derrick Griffin to knock off Dallas Kimball who were the 2 time defending 4A state champs. Griffin gets after it in the first quarter, Billy White Lobs it up Griffin throws it down. But Kimball wouldn't be where they were if they didn't have plenty of star power too, Keith Frazier is one of the top guards in the country and knocks down a 3 off the fast break to give Kimball a 20-7 lead in the 2nd quarter. Griffin who is a rare football and basketball all American candidate shows his range, but the Rangers were still down 8. Frazier comes up with this crazy lay up, he had 15 of his 24 points in the first half, as Kimball kept the heat on Terry 28-20 there. The Rangers get back in it, Dimetri Amerson goes right to the rack, and it was just a 1 point Kimball lead 32-33. Terry finally gets the lead for the first time when Griffin converts off of the reverse lay up 35-33 with a little over 2 minutes to go in the 3rd. Tied at 37 early in the 4th Billy White makes his presence felt as he gets quarter the reverse layup. This one went back and forth, Griffin is too strong inside, he finished with 26 points and Terry had a 1 point lead. Drake James only attempted one shot all night, but what a clutch moment it was, with his team down 5 with around 3 and half minutes to go James lets the 3 ball fly cutting the lead to 47-45. It turned the tide in the Rangers favor as Kimball wouldn't score again. Dimetri Amerson with the bucket and the foul to give Terry a lead they'd never lose, the Rangers go on for the 55-47 win and collect their first state basketball championship in school history. I think when we came back out, our coach gave us a speech and we knew there was no more playing time we knew what we had to do, we were ready and came out scoring. We came out with fire in our eyes we knew what we had to do from from the mistakes that we made in the first half, so we knew if we just sharpened up on our mistakes then we'd be successful in the 2nd half even though we weren't playing well and only down by 8. I love the support that we got from the small town that we're from and nobody really talked about us at the beginning of the year, and I felt we needed to leave a mark as me Derrick and Eugene were leaving, this is our last year so I felt we might as well put them on the map. For the Monumental win Terry is this week's Chevy Team of the week.
