Spring Westfield Red Hot in Hoops

January 10, 2022
Our Chevy Spotlight shines on the Spring Westfield Basketball Team. The Mustangs flew out of the gates by playing 15 straight road games and still are 15-1 and ranked 3rd in the state. The Mustangs may have what it takes to make it all the way to state.

Spring Westfield entered the 2021-22 season unranked and possibly overlooked. After 17 games, the Mustangs are underestimated……no longer. Thanks to one of the stingiest defenses around, Westfield is 16-1 and has allowed only 50 points per game.

Winning games is one thing, but what the Mustangs have done on the road is even more impressive. Of their first 17 games, 15 of them have been on the road with includes two holiday tournament championships. At last week’s VYPE tournament, Westfield knocked off ranked teams, Fort Bend Elkins, The Woodlands Christian Academy and Atascocita in consecutive games. Coach Billy Goffney says it’s his veteran bunch that’s help lead the way.

As the old meshes with the new, the Mustangs are starting district play where they haven’t lost a game in 2 years. That’s right, Westfield has gone undefeated through in district play for the past 31 games. Most experts feel that streak can carrying on through this year too. However, with expectations continuing to soar and now ranked 3rd in 6-A behind only national powers, Richardson and Duncanville, Coach Goffney finds himself reminding his players of the ultimate goal.
