Manvel Volleyball Makes First Trip to State

Every other year, the Manvel volleyball team would spend this week turning in their uniforms and reflecting on the season that was. But not this time….not this team. The Mavericks have another week of practice because they are heading to state for the first time in the school’s history. Thanks to a 5 set, come from behind victory over College Station, Manvel was one of the last 4 teams competing for a 5-A state title this weekend.

It’s quite an accomplishment for a team who started 14-11 in non district play. But the girls have reeled off 21 straight wins including a 5 setter against perennial power Friendswood to make it to state. The Mavericks finally came together at the exact right time.

Manvel has 4 seniors, but to call them the team leaders wouldn’t quite be accurate. This a team of 16 leaders according to Coach Kennedy. Any one of them can pick up the team when called upon.

The Mavericks got a tough draw in the state tournament. Friday they faced 8 time state champion, Lovejoy. However, the Manvel team from the beginning of the year has not only grown in experience, but in confidence too.
