Katy and North Shore are ready to shine under the bright lights of a national tv audience to kick off the 2019 season.
North Shore strikes first in this highly anticipated tilt. In the first, Mustangs quarterback Demetrius Davis tosses it out to John Gentry, and gentry slips his way out of not one but two tackles, and he’s gone. He races 81 yards down the far sideline all the way to the house and North Shore takes a 7-0 lead.
Katy looks to answer in the 2nd. Bronson Mclelland lofts one up into the end zone for Jordan Patrick and lucky number 13 hauls it in for the Tigers touchdown, we’re all tied up at 7 apiece.
North Shore responds on the ground. Highly touted recruit Zach Evans takes the handoff right up the middle and waltzes into the end zone with a 25-yard touchdown run, and the mustangs go back in front 14-7.
More Mustangs, Davis Handles the high snap, scrambles, and then finds a wide open Charles King. King lunges for the goalline and dives into the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown, North Shore leads 21-7 at halftime.
Katy not going away quietly however. Ron Hoff takes the pitch 8 yards to Paydirt for a Katy touchdown, Hoff rushes for 206 yards on the night, and the Tigers are back within 7, down 21-14.
Things really start to get interesting on the ensuing kickoff, the Mustangs can’t handle the kick and there’s DQ Dawson sliding in for the Tigers recovery that leads to a Katy field goal.
It’s 21-17 midway through the fourth quarter, with Katy facing a fourth down, but Mclelland calmly connects with Sam Dunn in the end zone, and the Tigers take their first lead of the game, 24-21.
And then with Katy looking to run the clock out, Mclelland goes to the air and hits Patrick, who breaks free and turns it into a huge gain that ices the game for Katy. What a way to start the season, Katy knocks off defending state champion North Shore, 24-21, scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half.
