Friendswood Survives Iowa Colony 48-42, Starts 6-0 for First Time Since 2010
For the first time since 2010, Friendswood is 6-and-0 — but it took a 48-42 comeback win over Iowa Colony on Friday night to get there.
The Mustangs entered the game undefeated and hosting, but Iowa Colony made things uncomfortable early. Falcons quarterback Izard Evans nearly put his team on the board first with an athletic quarterback draw, leaping one defender and sidestepping another before being stripped at the goal line. Grant Martin recovered in the end zone to keep it scoreless.
Friendswood eventually found the end zone when Josh Brister lofted a jump ball near the goal line and Peyton Lowe high-pointed it for the score. But the Mustangs' turnover issues resurfaced in the second quarter — backed up near their own goal line, Brister lost control of the ball while trying to punch it in, and Iowa Colony's Alonzo Bailey scooped it up and returned it 97 yards for the score, with a full convoy of blockers leading the way.
Iowa Colony took the lead in the third quarter when Evans connected with Braylon Watts on a slant route, and Watts added a pair of sharp moves after the catch to extend the gain. Friendswood answered quickly, with Brister hitting Lowe one-on-one with no safety help — Lowe avoided a shoestring tackle to keep the drive alive and pull the Mustangs back within striking distance.
The decisive blow came in the fourth quarter on a flanker screen from Brister to Jackson Owens, who made two defenders miss before racing down the sideline. Tripp Bateman's long run in the second quarter had also helped set the tone for a Friendswood ground game that kept the chains moving throughout.
The 48-42 final sends Friendswood to its best start in over 15 years, while Iowa Colony falls to 0-6 in a game that was far closer than the record differential suggests.
