Folks, we’ve finally made it – it is officially game week for class 5A and 6A and we’ve got some great games. Thursday kicks off with several marquee matchups and Friday keeps it going with another slate of great games.

This week, we’ll recap some of the small school games and provide a look-ahead to what’s coming up this weekend.

Bellville vs Rockdale

The matchup of the week proved to be easy work for Bellville.

I was incredibly interested to see Bellville’s dynamic duo – Richard Reese and Robert Briggs – face off against a premier talent in Rockdale’s Cam’Ron Valdez. Reese and Briggs came out on top and it wasn’t close.

Valdez finished with just 90 yards while Reese posted 155 yards and two scores on the ground. Briggs nearly matched that output with two touchdowns of his own and 106 receiving yards. Match that to 90 yards rushing and a score, plus one catch for 15 yards for Valdez, and it’s clear who came out on top.

The final score reflected it, too. Bellville rolled over Rockdale 42-14. As long as the Brahmas are trotting out Briggs and Reese, I think they can contend with anyone in in 4A Division II. Bellville is currently ranked No. 7 in the state with a 4-0 start.

Sealy vs Stafford

One victim of Bellville’s 4-0 start is the Stafford Spartans, who looked to rebound against Sealy.

It was a defensive slugfest the whole way, with Sealy going scoreless in the second half. The Tigers needed every bit of a 12-3 halftime lead to hold off the Spartans for a 12-10 victory.

Sealy quarterback D’vonne Hmielewski had a nice night, finishing with 111 yards on 14-of-20 passing and a nice rushing touchdown. Alvin Nunn and his brother A’vonte combined for 90 yards on the ground.

Sealy takes a 2-1 start back home next week to face a surprisingly good Bay City squad while Stafford will look to pick up its first win of the season against Wharton.
