The Cooldown: Week 2

I can’t believe we’ve made it this far but we’re somehow actually here. I remember in early July thinking there would be no way football would be played this season; now we’re two weeks into small school football and practice starts for the 5A and 6A schools this week!

To me, it truly felt like this moment would never come. So here’s your weekly reminder to stay safe, wear your masks, and don’t take any of this for granted. With that being said, I’m going to recap two of 4A games from last week plus I list my preseason 5A and 6A top 10.

Bellville vs Cameron Yoe

Last week, I talked about how Cameron Yoe would be a good early season test for Bellville, and the Brahmas passed with flying colors.

Yoe has four football state titles, including three-straight between 2012-14. That doesn’t mean the Yoemen are state-caliber every season, but they’re certainly nothing to mess with. Of course a classification separates the two with Yoe playing in 3A Division I and Bellville playing in 4A Division II, but it was an impressive win nonetheless.

It came behind a career night from running back Richard Reese, who went for a whopping 344 yards and seven touchdowns on a good Yoemen defense. Yoe ranked ninth in the state in 3A Division I, and Bellville could soon see itself in the top 10 of 4A rankings after two impressive wins to start the season.

Bellville will look to remain perfect against Stafford next week as Yoe will take a 1-1 record on the road to face Franklin.

Navasota vs Sealy

Perhaps the most competitive game of the night came down to the wire – one of the few nail biters in the area on Friday night.

Navasota was able to fend off Sealy for a 33-28 victory, but not before Sealy made several rallies late in the game. After a Navasota score early in the fourth looked to put things out of hand, Sealy answered quickly with a touchdown run from Alvin Nunn before the Rattlers were able to bleed out almost all of the remaining seven minutes.

Navasota quarterback Ja’Mar Jessie had an outstanding night, racking four touchdowns – three of which came through the air. Two of those touchdown scores came from 50+ yards out as well. A 2-0 start gives the Rattlers momentum heading into a showdown with Mexia next week. Sealy will look to bounce back from an opening night loss as they hit the road to face Somerset.
