This Week We Go Around the Area As DQ Helps Us Preview Class 5A and Below

08/19/24

One thing to note about 5A Division 1 in Houston is that most of the top teams from last year have moved up to 6A this year. The Magnolia schools and Fulshear were very successful in this classification a year ago, but they’ve left an opening for someone else to make some moves. That team could be LaPorte. The Bulldogs went 8-3 last season and return both of their dangerous running backs, Tyresse Barnes and Ricky Sandolph. Both rushed over a thousand yards in Kevin Berneathy (Ber-NEETH-ee)’s Wing T offense. However with both of them stocky, 5’9 tailbacks, Berneathy hesitates in calling them a “thunder and lightning” combination.

Barbers Hill went two rounds deep last year and bring back a speedy running back of their own in Jadon Rodriguez. One team looking to challenge themselves this year is Galveston Ball. The Tors were not challenged much the past two seasons in their previous district and it may have hurt them come post season. This year they will truly earn their spot in the playoffs as they are in a district with Barbers Hill, Port Arthur Memorial and others. Head Coach Sheldon Bennight (Buh-night) says the upgrade in competition is a blessing in disguise.

In Division 2, it’s all about the athletes and most of them can be found in 9-5A. Richmond Randle went 11-2 a year ago and they did that with a freshman running back, Landon Williams-Callis, rushing for almost 2 thousand yards. They will have a huge target on their back this fall for sure. But they are in a district with another up and comer in Iowa Colony. The Pioneers are moving up from 4A where they went 12-1. They are led by a sophomore quarterback, Carson White, who can succeed with his arm and his legs. Then there’s Fort Bend Marshall. The Buffs are always a power in track and those athletes shine on the football field as well. However, 2 out of the last 3 years, Marshall was a first round exit in the post season. They need to stop that trend this year. Lake Creek will be a favorite in 8-5A, but they have defending state champion, Port Neches-Groves, to deal with. In 4A, Division 2 runners up Bellville will be looking to punch their ticket back to AT&T stadium again. D D Murray can you hurt you as a running back and cornerback and defensive end D J Sanders?? Well…he can just HURT YOU. In Division 1, look for El Campo and Bay City to make a long run in the post season.
