Schulenburg Head Coach Richard Hoogendoorn Has Over 850 Career Wins

In a small practice gym in Schulenburg, Richard Hoogendoorn (Who-Gen-Dorn) begins his 45th year of coaching and his 23rd season as the Short Horns head coach. After such a long and successful career, it would be understandable for him to ride off into the sunset, but that’s simply not Coach Hoog’s (who-g) way. And what Coach Hoogendoorn is doing is winning games…..ALOT OF THEM. He’s eclipsed well over 850 wins in his high school career and is closing in on 900. Schulenburg is a small 2-A school, but Coach Hoog always loves to challenge his boys, so when it’s schedule making time, he seeks out larger schools. Might be one reason he hasn’t reached 900 wins already. The Short Horns have struggled out the gates as they were winless through their first 7 games. But that’s ok. Coach Hoog’s teams have often started slow, but finished strong. They’ve been to a couple state tournaments including 2020 and several regional tournaments as well. His athletes respond well to Hoogendoorn’s positive approach The 2023 version of the Short Horns are young and fast. Sometimes Coach Hoog feels his guys may be “too” fast, but they know their quickness will cause problems as the year progresses.
