Derek Brown, Katy High School Football - Chevy Spotlight
The Katy Tigers boast a tradition of winning that few teams in the country can match, 7 state championships 6 of which have come since 1997. Make no mistake there have been extremely talented players, but that's hardly the root of the success. Soundbite: Cody Gessler/Katy Def. Lineman Having D-1 talent it's not gonna hurt you, we have a couple of guys that have that talent it's all about discipline and foundation it's why we're successful. Soundbite: Gary Jospeh/Katy Head Coach The statement of this program we have kids that are gonna work hard, the expectation is not that all of them are gonna be division I players but all of them can learn how to do their best but all of them can be unselfish and learn to respect each other the kids are gonna have great character when we're talented enough but you can't always be the most talented, but you can always do your best. A player on this year's team who embodies that hardworking never quit spirit is backup noseguard Derek Brown. At 6-4 and around 300 pounds he would appear to have the frame of a future NFL lineman, however Derek's right arm is only about 60 percent as strong as his left. When I was born I was pretty much too big to come out of my mothers womb so they had to grab me by my right arm and pull me out and when they pulled me out they ripped all the nerves and ligaments. When I came out it was the same size when the nerves ripped it stopped my arm from moving it wasn't able to get the nutrients my right arm got bigger left arm stayed the same size. He's gone from being told he'd never play football, to being a junior and playing on the Katy. Something tells me I'm not gonna quit or give in to what doctors say, I'm just not gonna accept it. My arm will never move, try to get 100/100 but I'll stay working at it. I give the guy credit I see him trying to work out the other arm, he's working hard trying to get the arm strength film room, working hard. He's a big old kid, he's come a long way he's more used to playing with it. You talk to your kids about being appreciative of what they have, he doesn't have everything but you got to make the best of everything. Derek's fit in like any other member of the team, just trying to add to the legend of the Tigers. The Katy Tigers Football Team This Week's Chevy Spotlight
